Google Analytics Is Not Showing Search Keywords

While analyzing my website traffic trend, today in my Google analytics account I found something surprising for one of my URL, for which the source was Google and there were no search keywords, instead it was showing ‘Not provided’. Isn’t it surprising?

After doing some search I found that Google Analytics will no more show those search terms in Analytics. But how come for other visits it showed the search terms? The answer is Google analytics will not show your search terms for which the user was logged in to Google account.

What was happening behind the scene?

Though most of us know what happens and what those search terms are, I would like to give a little brief about it. Whenever you search for something on Google and click on any result you will be taken to that website as well as some information about your activity is also stored into the Google analytics account of that website if it uses Google analytics. This information is:

  1. The source from where you reached the website in this case it is Google
  2. The search query you used to reach the website.

The above information is very useful in SEO and most of the webmasters use this information to do SEO on their website. But on the other hand you may need privacy regarding your activity on the Google search as an internet user. So if you do not want your activity to be stored for analytics you can do Google search while you are logged into your Google account.
