Know Your Bluetooth Options

Don’t buy the first cool-looking Bluetooth headset you see, because that may be the only good thing it has going for it. Each one is packed with different features; you want to make sure your headset does what you want it to do, and nothing that you don’t.

  1. Compatibility: The most important aspect of buying a Bluetooth is compatibility. Check the software requirements for the Bluetooth, and make sure it’s compatible with your smartphone and your PC or Mac.
  2. Dictation: If you do a lot of driving or working with your hands, a dictation feature may be just what you need. Some Bluetooth headsets allow you to dictate text messages and emails, rather than typing them out. The headset will also read your texts and emails to you to keep your hands free.
  3. Sound: Sound quality is of paramount importance, because the Bluetooth will connect you to incoming calls. If you can’t hear who’s speaking, what good is the headset? Some headsets have multiple speakers, and multiple microphones that will improve your sound quality on the other end of the call.
  4. Fit: Lots of Bluetooth shoppers choose their headsets for looks and features, and forget all about the fit. Arguably, this is the most important option of all. If the Bluetooth isn’t comfortable to wear, you’ll never be happy with it. Generally speaking, a Bluetooth will fit in one of five different ways: an ear hook, an ear clip, a neckband, an earbud or headphones. Try each type of fit, and try several types of Bluetooth headsets to find one that feels effortless to wear.
  5. Looks: The way the Bluetooth looks is important, too. You won’t enjoy using it if you don’t think it looks good. The style will also affect the size of the device, which isn’t to be overlooked. Remember, you have to store the Bluetooth when you aren’t using it, so choose a size that’s convenient for you.
  6. Battery: How long do you intend to use the Bluetooth per session? If you’re going to make lots of calls or listen to music for a long time, you have to consider battery life.

The Extras

Some Bluetooth headsets have extra bells and whistles that add convenience. An LCD screen shows caller ID information and allows you to look through other phone data. Stereo Bluetooth headsets give you a richer sound, something you’ll want if you listen to a lot of music. Voice activation is a handy feature that keeps you hands-free while you use the headset.

Bluetooth Love

Many smartphones and free cell phones are Bluetooth-capable. Look for a Bluetooth that’s compatible with lots of different smartphones. You’ll probably upgrade your phone more often than your headset, so buy for features and function and you can’t go wrong.
