According to WordPress there are over 60 million websites built using WordPress platform. WordPress is such a customizable CMS that it can be easily used as a social networking website. Such a great level of customization is possible in WordPress because of plugin support and theme support. As WordPress is a community driven software, it has got lots of plugin and theme base. Some are free and some are commercial. Among all these plugins, some plugins are there which are essential and advisable for WordPress, though you may not use them. So here is a list of basic level essential plugins for WordPress site. These are all free and open source and can be downloaded from official WordPress plugin repository. So I present my favorite list of most essential WordPress plugins.

This is probably the most complete plugin for WordPress I have ever seen. There are lots of other SEO plugins but this is the only SEO plugin you need for your WordPress blog. This plugin has got multiple features like adding appropriate meta tags, generating sitemap, focus keywords etc.

2. W3 Total Cache

This is the best ever caching solution for WordPress. Use of this plugin definitely increases the performance of WordPress site. This plugin has got all the features that you need for improving performance of WordPress. It lets you minify scripts, cache database queries, add expiry headers to static images and more.

3. WP Optimize

This is a must have database clean up and optimization tool for your WordPress site. It lets you to remove post revisions, comments in the spam queue, un-approved comments, items in trash within few clicks.

4. Limit Log in Attempts

This plugin helps in preventing brute force attack on your WordPress site by limiting the rate of login attempts. Limit Login Attempts blocks an Internet address from making further attempts after a specified limit on retries is reached, making a brute-force attack difficult or impossible.

5. Google Authenticator

It gives you two-factor authentication using the Google Authenticator app for Android/iPhone/Blackberry. This adds a 2-step authentication process for your WordPress site similar to Gmail or Dropbox.
