Driving traffic to your website is a very difficult task especially when you are running a blog. Most of the bloggers are dependent on the search engines to get traffic to their blogs. But at the same we bloggers and webmasters forget some basic SEO tips and make mistakes. There are some common SEO mistakes that almost all bloggers and webmasters do. So it is very important to know these common SEO mistakes and avoid them always to remain at the top of the search result page.

Common SEO mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Use of Wrong Keywords

Keywords are the most important aspect of SEO process and there comes the most common mistake. Most of the webmasters and bloggers make the mistake of selecting wrong rather I should say less valued keywords. While writing any post or article we select those keywords which we think are the best suitable keywords, but those keywords may not be the high valued keywords. High value keywords are those keywords which are highly used by the users to search on any search engines. You can do a proper research on the keywords and then choose the best ones for you.

To select the proper keywords you can use Google Keyword Tool to explore more about the proper keywords. I would recommend you to select those keywords which have lesser competition and high monthly search volume. This way you can have less competition and more traffic to your website.

Mistake #2: Not Using “alt” Tags for the Images

Images are human friendly and help a lot to understand a topic easily for anybody. But what can an image do in the process of SEO? Images can help a lot in achieving a great SEO rank. Though images cannot be understood by the search engines but the description in the alt tag can be indexed by the search engines. That is why ‘alt’ tag is a best place to put your targeted or relevant keywords. So never leave your alt tag blank anymore.

Mistake #3: Duplicate Content

Duplicate contents are those contents which are exactly copied from any other blog or website. Most of the new bloggers with less knowledge copy the content from other blog and publish it on their own blog, this is not only a case of plagiarism but you will be a victim of duplicate content and will be penalized by the search engines. Not only copying content from other blogs but if you have duplicate content in your own blogs then also you will be penalized. Example of duplicate content across your website is a print page. So make sure that you do not have duplicate content across your website. If you have any duplicate page then use rel=canonical link to specify the same.

Mistake #4: Poor Use of Internal Anchor Texts

Most of the webmasters do the mistake of using poor anchor tag texts for example “click here”, “download”, ” more” etc. By using these types of poor words as the texts for the anchor tags you are losing the chance to help search engines understand what is link is all about.

Always use the proper explanation texts for your anchor tags to help search engines understand better about the link.

Mistake #5: Over Optimizing Pages (Keyword Saturation)

Over optimization comes into picture when you fill your page with extensive amount of keywords. After learning SEO some people try to fill the page with the same keyword to get a good search ranking, but this is a fact that if your page is saturated with those keywords it will be penalized by search engines and as a result the page will get a very poor search ranking.

Mistake #6: Not Tracking the Analytics Report

As a webmaster you should always keep tracking your web analytics report to check the trend of your web traffic. Search engines are changing their algorithm frequently to show the best quality results in the search page, so it is necessary to keep tracking the analytics report and check if you are losing any search traffic. If you are losing traffic then find out the reason and take the appropriate action.

Mistake #7: Involving in Poor Link Exchanging

We all know that backlinks are one of the important parts in the process of SEO. Backlinks help in improving the PageRank of your website, so in order to improve the pagerank most of the webmasters involve in exchanging links with others. But sometimes this link exchange may reduce the quality of your website if you are exchanging links with poor or banned websites. If you have a link on your blog which points to a banned website then your pagerank may reduce.

Mistake #8: Use of Splash Pages

Splash pages are the pages with animated flash and big images and contain a single link to redirect to other page. As the splash page does not contains any content except a link so search engine spiders give less value to those pages.

Mistake #9: Use of Bad or Irrelevant Title

Titles are the most important part for a search engine. Search engines first look at the title of the page and then based on information on the title they do next assessment on the content. So use of relevant and good title is most important.
