You must have seen the term “Bounce rate” while analyzing your website traffic. If you search you site in Alexa, then also you can find a term Bounce Rate. So what does this Bounce Rate exactly mean and why is it so important for your website.

Today in this post I will try to explain what Bounce Rate is and why is it so important for your web site.Let’s first see what is a bounce, bounce is: if a visitor visits any page of your site (landing page) and then leaves the page without navigating to any other page or link, then it is called a bounce. So now we can define in a simple sentence “Bounce Rate is the percentage of single page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance or the landing page”. If we put the whole thing in a mathematical formula it would be:

 In decimal form:

Bounce Rate = Total Number of Bounce/Total Number Of visits

In percentage:

Bounce Rate =

(Total Number of Bounce/Total Number Of visits)*100

How does a Bounce occur?

  • The visitor closes the browser without visiting any other page/link
  • Visitor hits the Back Button of the browser without visiting any other page/link
  • Visitor clicks on any of the external link on your site without visiting any other page/link
  • Visitor types a new URL on the browser without visiting any other page/link
  • Visitor clicks on any add on your site without visiting any other page/link

The lower is the bounce rate on your site, the more it is good as the visitors will be more engaged on your site and they will try to explore your site more and more and you will get a good number of loyal users.

How does it affect your site?

Now let’s see how it affects to your website. If you have a high bounce rate that means the visitors are not interested on your site as visitors are not getting proper information from your site. Hence gradually the popularity of your site will decrease.

On the other side if the bounce rate is low, your visitors are interested in your site content and thus your site gets more and more popularity.
